Transforming Education in Rhode Island: What’s the story?
We are proud that, through our Race to the Top grant, we have brought teachers and school leaders together to work in partnership toward transforming education. We asked Rhode Island educators to reflect on work that has transformed teaching and learning in their schools. We hope you will enjoy reading these “success stories” from across our state!

Teachers and administrators see the value in utilizing the strategies learned in data training.

This is my second year as Assistant Superintendent.  Before I got here little work was done with our funds.  However, we have done an effective job of using our money to carry out the required initiatives.  We have involved central office administrators, building administrators and teachers in the process of planning to meet our commitments.

What we found surprising about our involvement in Race to the Top...

There is consensus that the Data Use PD has been very helpful.  We are using data more than ever to drive all decisions related to teaching and learning.  Also, by all accounts, the new teacher induction program has been highly successful.

Race to the Top impacted our district by...

As was mentioned previously, there is more of a focus on data than ever before.  Teachers and administrators are seeing the value in utilizing the strategies they have learned in their training.  Formative assessments are being used more frequently at all grade levels.  Teachers are seeing the benefit of utilizing formative assessments to guide instruction.

In the future, we plan to keep this going through...

We will continue our work on formative assessment and data use.  All certified staff are getting more comfortable with the EES.  Teachers and administrators report that creating SLOs is getting easier with experience.  We will continue to improve the quality of our SLOs.
