Transforming Education in Rhode Island: What’s the story?
We are proud that, through our Race to the Top grant, we have brought teachers and school leaders together to work in partnership toward transforming education. We asked Rhode Island educators to reflect on work that has transformed teaching and learning in their schools. We hope you will enjoy reading these “success stories” from across our state!

We focused on using data to inform instruction, but had much to learn about using data most effectively.


Portsmouth participated in the Data Use Professional Development during the 2012-2013 school year.  A team of four individuals from each school participated, consisting of the building principal, the literacy/instructional coach, a teacher, and an RTI specialist or a student support specialist.


What we found surprising about our involvement in Race to the Top...

While we had been focused on using data to inform our instruction, we had a long way to go and much to learn about using data most effectively.  This was a good realization to our teams, particularly to our classroom teachers and building principals.


Race to the Top impacted our district by...

There has been a much greater shift to using data in grade level team meetings to determine where students struggle and why and who is achieving at high levels.


In the future, we plan to keep this going through...

Teams of teachers will continue to meet in grade level meetings (common planning time) and through release time to continue reviewing student data based on common assessments to ensure continuous improvement for all students.
