Transforming Education in Rhode Island: What’s the story?
We are proud that, through our Race to the Top grant, we have brought teachers and school leaders together to work in partnership toward transforming education. We asked Rhode Island educators to reflect on work that has transformed teaching and learning in their schools. We hope you will enjoy reading these “success stories” from across our state!

Evaluations had a positive impact on teacher practice, student achievement, and culture
Over the past two school years, Segue’s administration has participated in a number of RIDE trainings on the Educator Evaluation system. Throughout this time, we have held regular meetings with our faculty to keep them up-to-date in changes and requirements. In following RIDE’s suggestions for timeline and elements, we have rolled out a very transparent system that has given our team the structure to provide regular feedback and engage in reflection. As administrators have grown comfortable with the system, we have built capacity around the system by providing in-house training for complementary evaluators. This year, in expanding to include certified support staff and all other staff, we have brought the training to staff outside of the faculty and developed a similar tool for evaluating non-certified staff. We find tremendous value in having a similar evaluation tools for all Segue staff.

What we found surprising about our involvement in Race to the Top...
Segue’s implementation of the Educator Evaluation system has been a huge success. This work has provided both formal and informal opportunities for teachers to receive feedback on their instruction and engage in reflection with administrators and their colleagues. The response of the faculty as a whole has been extremely positive.
Race to the Top impacted our district by...
The work done around educator evaluation has provided a structure for conversations between teachers and administrators with a focus on growth. This has helped provide a positive foundation for implementation. Evaluators have used the data received from evaluations to make connections to other initiatives like data use, formative assessment, and CCSS curriculum alignment. We are very excited by the positive impact the educator evaluation system has had on teacher practice, student achievement, and the school’s overall culture.
In the future, we plan to keep this going through...
We plan to continue to build on the practices we’ve established this year by developing a peer (non-evaluative) observation system with all teachers in the building. We will also be creating a professional development plan for the 2014-2015 school year based on this year’s evaluation data and feedback.
