Transforming Education in Rhode Island: What’s the story?
We are proud that, through our Race to the Top grant, we have brought teachers and school leaders together to work in partnership toward transforming education. We asked Rhode Island educators to reflect on work that has transformed teaching and learning in their schools. We hope you will enjoy reading these “success stories” from across our state!

The new curriculum resulted in a change in Tiverton's approach to instructional planning.

RTT funding supported our involvement in a multi-district K-12 math curriculum initiative, which involved approximately 24 teachers and administrators.  They participated in 12 days of professional development during the 2012-13 school year that included an in-depth study of the CCSS math standards, research on effective mathematics instruction, and support in developing a K-12 scope and sequence and units of study.

What we found surprising about our involvement in Race to the Top...
There were many important outcomes of this work, but the most important is the in-depth understanding of the CCSSs and pedagogical shifts needed, that teachers developed through this process.  I have heard repeatedly that teachers know these math standards at a much deeper level than with previous state standards.  I am impressed by the knowledge they acquired and the rich discussions that take place in our district.

Race to the Top impacted our district by...
The implementation of our new curriculum has resulted in a change in our approach to instructional planning. Teachers are now looking closely at their units of study: the content and processes, essential questions, prior and future learning, and assessment. This information is used to develop an instructional guide for each unit, which lists appropriate resources and instructional strategies. This work has been completed in conjunction with Bristol-Warren and Newport, as an extension of our curriculum work.

In the future, we plan to keep this going through...
Moving forward, our math curriculum team will continue to monitor and adjust our curriculum units and review appropriate resources.  As a result of the intensive curriculum work we participated in, our teachers have developed the knowledgeable needed to identify and develop instructional resources that are fully aligned to content and practices within CCSS.
